Long Jing tea is probably the most popular variety of green Chinese tea, both in China and around the world. A famous water well gives Long Jing, Chinese for “Dragon Well,” tea it’s name.

Throughout antiquity, this well provided the only source of water when all other wells dried up during the hot summer.

Locals thought there must be a dragon down in the well, for a dragon was believed to be in charge of rain and water in ancient China.

So the people gave Long Jing tea its name based on this well, because they believed the tea was a miracle too.

An Emperor's Cure

Long Jing tea has also made its mark on Chinese imperial history. Emperor Qianlong was once on an inspection tour, and he joined the Long Jing tea farmers at work. While picking the tea, a messenger brought him the news that his mother was sick. In a hurry, he stuffed some green tea buds in his pocket and rushed back to Beijing.

When he arrived and saw his mother, she smelled a great aroma as he entered the room. She said, “What’s that lovely fragrance?”

The emperor reached to his pocket and realized that it was the tea leaves he’d taken from the tea farm. His mother liked the smell, and she asked for a taste of that tea.

The queen not only enjoyed the taste, but also recovered from her sickness that same day!

Amazed by the healing effects and sweet, delicate flavor of Long Jing tea, the emperor then demanded large amounts of it as an annual tribute from the local city government.

So don't hesitate, drink up a hot cup of Long Jing Chinese tea and see what's in store for you!
