Da Hong Pao Chinese tea translates to "Big Red Robe." How did it get this name?

The original Da Hong Pao Chinese tea plants still grow on a sheer cliff in southern China, and because the spot is so steep and dangerous, people in ancient times had to use monkeys to pick the leaves.

These monkeys were dressed in little red waistcoats so their trainers could keep track of them.

This is one explanation for its name, but another legend has it that a young scholar gave Da Hong Pao Chinese tea its name.

The scholar fell ill while on his way to the imperial examinations, and tea made with leaves from a rock-side tree helped him recover. So his trip continued and he made it to the exams just in time.

He passed the exam, and then the scholar, now a powerful governor, returned and offered the tree his red robe. To everyone’s surprise, after that moment tea made with leaves from the tree became red.

Locals were stunned by the miracle, and they started to call the tea Da Hong Pao, which means Big Red Robe.
